Osler Education’s Early Childhood Mental Health certificate course provides workers already working with children such as health providers or working in the education system with fundamental knowledge for important mental health and behavioral skills. Students will gain further knowledge in the most key areas of mental health and behavior including human development, children with disabilities, family systems, and much more.
During this module, students will learn key components of the mental status examination and how to adequate approach a clinical differential diagnosis utilizing the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM) thoroughly and effectively.
Students will learn about family dynamics including development and structure. Students will understand the different dynamics of a family which will better assist them in responding to children during treatments or sessions.
Students will learn about how attachments develop during caregiving and long-term effects. Students will understand how the environment will influence development as well as brain growth and function.
Students will focus on the stages of human development from infancy to adulthood. Students will learn about the changes in the human body during these stages. Students will learn about familiar challenges during human development which can cause functional issues.
This module will focus on children with developmental differences and how family dynamics can be adapted to support these disabilities and help these children thrive. Students will learn about the common disabilities which can occur from birth or after.
Students will focus on identifying behavioral issues as well as addressing them. Many factors can influence the behavior of a child and students will learn to identify, address, and treat the children. Students will learn how to communicate effectively with these children to better assist with treatment.
During this module, students will focus on how to examine and assess young adults, children and the dynamics of a family. Students will learn about common indicators during a session.
This course will focus on the right ways to promote encouragement in young children and help them thrive. Students will learn about helping young children gain confidence and self-awareness.
Students will be placed in a clinical setting to gain valuable in-person and hands-on experience.
The objective of the Early Childhood Mental Health course is to provide a better understanding of the disorders that constitute mental illnesses. This course will serve to enhance individual skills on how to better assess and manage mental health situations in young children and adolescents.
The Early Childhood Mental Health certificate course runs for 8-weeks through our Self Pace (distance/online education) course. The Self Pace course is broken down into self-study modules and students are evaluated final examinations for each module. It is recommended that notes are taken during class and the Instructors will provide a list of the recommended readings/textbooks. The class instructors are Professionals with extensive experience in the courses that are being taught.
This course is specifically designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of medical students/graduates, residents, healthcare professionals, community and social workers, educators and law enforcement officials who work with children with mental health or mood disorders.
