Global Health Certificate

Course description

Osler Education’s Global Health certificate course is a foundation course designed for individual who have a educational or professional background in healthcare. Students will study the political, economic, and social impact of health populations. Students will learn about disease control in developing countries and what the biggest causes of death and disease are in those countries. Students will focus on planning, implementing, and executing healthcare programs. The Global Health certificate course is a foundation professional development course that can be taken as an introductory course for students who may pursue a further education in healthcare or global health.

Introduction to Global Health

Students will be introduced to the current and important health issues that affect us today. Students will also learn how International health promotion and global policies are having a positive impact and influence on global health.

Ethics in Global Health

This module will focus on how when students or volunteers are sent on-site to assist a population in need, they may lack the extensive training required which could have a detrimental outcome to the population. Global health ethics examines the quality of standards of professional as well as social behavior.

Disease Control Programs and Policies

Students will learn about the history of Disease Control Programs & Policies and how they have evolved and continue to evolve. This course will also focus on current initiatives from major international global health organizations.

Nutrition

This module will discuss the high mortality rate of children caused by malnutrition. Students will learn about the cause of malnutrition amongst different populations and how were working towards improving nutrition amongst these populations.

Immunization Essentials

This module will outline the diseases that are preventable by immunization, current global projects to ensure all children are provided immunizations, and the basic understanding of why we should be vaccinated.

Sociology of Healthcare

Students will learn about the cultural, social, and social psychological factors in disease processes, distribution of disease, social definitions of illness, and organization of the health professions and health facilities.

Epidemiology

This module will focus on students understanding the practice of Epidemiology and why we have public health programs and policies in place. Students will learn about local and global major health issues.

Family & Poverty

Students will be introduced to how family behaviors vary by social or economic factors; how romantic relationships, childbearing, and childrearing may be implicated in poverty; what the consequences of poverty are for family functioning and children; and about the role of policy in influencing families and poverty.

Non-Communicable Diseases

This module will focus on the several types of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes etc. NCD’s are the leading cause of deaths in the world, majority in low-income countries.

Health in Developing Countries

Students will learn about health concerns in developing countries. The populations health in developing countries are already at risk due to poor water quality, toxic substances, and diseases. Students will learn about the goals and plans of improving these health concerns.

The Global Health professional development certificate course enables students to evaluate current healthcare programs in developing countries and discuss where improvements can be made by effectively understanding diverse cultural, social, and economical perspectives. Students will also plan, create, evaluate, and execute a community health care program.

The Global Health certificate course is a short 100-hour course. The online course spans over a 14-week time period and is broken down into modules and a quiz must be completed at the end of each module. It is recommended that notes are taken during class and the Instructors will suggest a recommended reading (if necessary) but a course textbook will not be required. The class instructors are Professionals with extensive experience in the courses that are being taught.

This course is for individuals who have a passion for health and have an interest in global health issues. The Global Health certificate course is a foundation professional development course that can be taken as an introductory course for students who may pursue a further education in healthcare or global health.
