Program description

The Diploma of Pre-Accounting & Finance Essentials at Osler Education is designed for students looking to set a foundation for Accounting & Finance and develop the skills and knowledge to pursue further education in accounting or finance. This program will provide the fundamentals of accounting & finance in today’s modern world and provide real-life scenarios to prepare and provide confidence for the students. Students are instructed based on a rigorous curriculum, which will set a solid foundation for students to build upon in their future studies.

Semester 1

  • Economics
  • This course will introduce students to the individual branches of microeconomics and macroeconomics such as performance, behaviors and structures of the economy. Students will learn about the modern markets functions in an economic way of thinking. This course will also focus on fiscal policies, government regulations, and monetary policies.

  • Financial Accounting I
  • This course will focus on teaching students the fundamentals of accounting and working in the accounting field. Financial statements and information will be discussed through the course. Students will learn about financial transactions and how they are processed each period.

  • Leadership, Ethics & Professional Skills
  • Students will be introduced to the basic skills that are essential for being an optimal leader in the workplace. Effective communication and professionalism is essential as well as ethical decision-making. Different leadership styles will be explored which will include how to handle conflict, team organization, team dynamics, and emotional intelligence.

  • Information Technology
  • This course will focus on introducing students to techniques and practices used in modern IT infrastructures. Students will develop the basic skills in Windows OS and desktop security. IT is always changing and advancing, this course will provide the most modern information for students to have a basic understanding of IT systems.

  • Statistics
  • This specific branch of mathematics focuses on analyzing, organizing, preparing and presenting data. Students will learn about interpreting statistics related to their variability, location, and shape. Students will develop familiarity with the construction of index numbers and their applications.

Semester 2

  • Financial Reporting I
  • This course will focus on understanding, analyzing, and comparing published financial statements. With these skills and techniques, students will be able to predict financial performance. Accounting fraud and prevention will be largely discussed during this course.

  • Taxation
  • Students will be introduced to Taxation from income, to capital gains, and estate taxes. Students will learn how Taxation helps to make economic decisions. Students will learn how to prepare payroll and remittances for government filings. This course will also teach students basic tax returns on commonly used tax return preparation software.

  • Management & Professional Accounting
  • Students will be introduced to topics such as communicating, analyzing and measuring information to reach the goals of an organization. Items such as standard costing, cost behaviors, budgeting, make or buy decisions, return on investment and discounted cash flow for capital budgeting will be reviewed.

  • Financial Accounting II
  • This course will focus on going in-depth with financial accounting areas such as; international accounting, investing, foreign in currency transactions, non-profit accounting, income tax allocation, consolidation, and much more.

  • Corporate Finance
  • Students will focus on learning finance within the business, whether it being a large business or small business. Students will learn about business investments, the return of investments, and value maximization. This course will also focus on business debt and equity.

Semester 3

  • Financial Reporting II
  • Students will gain more in-depth knowledge into financial reporting such as foreign currency and financial statements, business combinations, reporting and recording business investments, and financial reporting for non-profit agencies.

  • International Accounting
  • This course will focus on policies and procedures business must follow with international accounting. Most modern businesses have international counterparts or relationships which means there are different procedures and policies they will need to follow when creating financial statements, filing income tax statements, financial reporting, and much more.

  • Auditing
  • This course will focus on teaching students the basic principles of legal liability, audit evidence, audit objectives, and more. Students will study and understand the purpose of audit function with procedures and techniques. Students will go through an auditors decision-making steps and reasonings.

  • Business Law
  • This course will help students focus on familiarizing themselves with the Canadian legal system. Students will learn about frequent issues that occur on the financial services side of a business. A large focus on the course will be on the law of torts and contracts. This course will also focus on corporation law, employment law, and legal aspects of credit.

  • Business Strategy
  • This course will focus on the foundations of successful business strategies. Students will learn how to craft and execute successful business strategies while being ethical and socially reasonable. This course will focus on students understanding the theory of strategic business.

The objective of the Pre-Accounting & Finance Essentials Diploma program is to provide students with the fundamentals required to further their education in the accounting or finance areas and pursue additional education and training at international business schools.

The Diploma of Pre-Accounting & Finance Essentials is a 42-week program divided into three, 14-week semesters, for a total of 350-hours of instruction time. Students earn a total of 150 credits upon completion of the program. The online course is broken down into self-study modules and students are evaluated by mid-semester and final examinations for each module. The in-class course is a lecture style course and students are evaluated by mid-semester and final examinations for each module. It is recommended that notes are taken during class and the Instructors will provide a list of the recommended readings/textbooks. Students will undergo various testing methods including quizzes, tests, midterm exams, final exams and assignments. The class instructors are Professionals with extensive experience in the courses that are being taught.

This program is designed for students who are looking to pursue a higher education in accounting and finance and get the required prerequisites to attend an international business (accounting & finance) school. This program plays an important intermediary role in a student’s educational path. This diploma will serve as a refresher program to students with an educational or professional experience finance or accounting.

  • Official transcript(s) from high-school or post-secondary school with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 (“B” grade)

  • Color photograph of the applicant

  • Resume or Personal Statement. A personal statement is summary of the students’ interests, goals, personal attributes, etc. that can classify the student as a suitable candidate for the program of their interest. Please limit personal statements to 500 words.

  • A letter of recommendation from a teacher, professor, employer, work/volunteer supervisor or any professional individual that is not personally related with the applicant.

  • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS – 6.0 or better); if applicable.

What credential will be awarded upon completion of the Program

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a Diploma of Pre-Accounting & Finance Essentials.
